I little bit about me:

My name is João Valente I was born in Lisbon, Portugal. Therefore, I am Portuguese. Currently, I am a postdoctoral researcher in Laboratory of Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing and Unmanned Aerial Remote Sensing Facility from the Wageningen University & Research.

I studied Computer and Electronics Engineering in the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

I have been working in robotics since 2007. My long journey as Roboticist started in Rome at the “La Sapienza” University. I was visitor student in the dipartimento Antonio Ruperti where I made my dissertation thesis supervised by Daniele Nardi and Luis Gomes. Over one year I worked in the SIED Lab, which means Laboratory for Intelligent Systems for Emergencies and Civil defense, situated at the Istituto Superiore Antincendi (ISA). In the present called LabRoCoCo.

After that, I joined immediately the Robotics & Cybernetics research group from the Centre for Automation and Robotics UPM-CSIC where I began as a researcher and Master/PhD student in Robotics & Automation. I received my PhD from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Escola Técnica Superiore de Ingeneros Industriales) in November of 2014. My advisor was Antonio Barrientos, head of the Robotics & Cybernetics research group.

During my PhD I have done two research stays: From November of 2012 to February of 2013, I was a visiting research associate at the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Lab in the Electrical Engineering Department of The City College of New York - the flagship campus of the City University of New York system. My advisor was Jizhong Xiao. Moreover, from February to April of 2014 I was visiting research associate at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Institut de Recherches Interdisciplinaires et de Développements en Intelligence Artificielle (IRIDIA) under the supervision of Thomas Stützle.

Finally, from 2015 to 2017 I was appointed as visiting professor at the Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas y Automática from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M). I was also researcher at the Robotics Lab.
